The Academy Theatre Overview
In the spring of 2005, the Academy Theatre relocated its programming to a space in downtown Avondale Estates and created an arts center. The Academy Theatre’s goal is to enrich the metropolitan community by providing a space for the exploration of the arts, producing educational youth-focused outreach and nurturing appreciation for the performing and visual arts through presentation of quality professional artistic work. The Arts Center serves as a gathering place for residents of Avondale Estates and the surrounding area, offering theatre, dance, music, and other experiences in the arts for children and adults.

Founded in 1956 by Frank Wittow, the Academy Theatre has been highly regarded for its productions of classic and contemporary plays, as well as its strong educational outreach programs – including a Theatre for Youth Artists-In-Schools Tour, Senior Touring Ensemble and numerous play development projects with underserved, at-risk and special populations. The Academy Theatre was the first professional theatre in the Southeast to integrate, premiered one of America’s first Shakespeare Festivals in 1960, and initiated a commitment to arts-in-education in Georgia schools that continues to this day. Over two million Georgia school children have been served through the Academy’s highly acclaimed, innovative performances.
